WHAT IS PSYCHOTHERAPY?

Psychotherapy concerns itself with deeper underlying personality problems, and conditions that cause issues in our wellbeing.

Psychotherapists support people facing challenges in life, whether an emotional crisis such as traumas, grief, depression, anxiety, job loss, relationship difficulties, addiction. Or it may be a sense that something is not right in our lives.

Psychotherapy recognises the lasting impact of trauma. This is when stressful events that you experience or witness make you feel unsafe, helpless or vulnerable. You’ll work with a therapist to think about what has happened to you, not what is wrong with you. The focus is on compassion listening and understanding rather than making a diagnosis.

Psychotherapy can be a powerful, life-changing experience that can help you to improve your mental health, overcome social or emotional challenges, and fulfil your potential.

There are also lots of different formats for psychotherapy. A therapist can provide one-to-one support, or work with you and a partner or family member, or in a group. You might see them face to face in their practice or home, or speak on the phone or via video chat online.

WHAT IS RELATIONAL PSYCHOTHERAPY?

As human beings, our closest relationships lie at the core of our mental wellbeing. Research shows that without meaningful connections, we struggle to thrive—and as infants, we cannot even survive. Our brains are wired for connection; our very sense of self and independence depends on relationships as the foundation of our being.

Relational psychotherapy centres on the relationship and trust built between the client and the therapist.

It is this connection between the client and therapist that creates the space for greater self-awareness and meaningful change to take place.

We understand psychological growth as emerging through relationships that are both mutually empathic and mutually empowering.

From this understanding of human development, it follows that achieving the best outcomes in psychotherapy requires a trusting relationship and a strong therapeutic alliance between the client and therapist. Combined with an empathic and genuine approach from the therapist, these elements are essential for success.

A relationally focused therapist must be attuned to the client’s process, their own internal process, and the dynamics of the relationship between them in order to provide the most effective therapy. By using the therapeutic relationship as a third element, the therapist and client can explore it as a reflection of how the client engages in relationships beyond the therapy room.

WHO IS PSYCHOTHERAPY FOR?

Psychotherapy can help when depression, low self-esteem, addiction, bereavement, or other factors leave a person feeling overwhelmed. It can also help treat mental health conditions.

Psychotherapy can help people in a range of situations. For example, it may benefit someone who:

  • has overwhelming feelings of sadness or helplessness

  • feels anxious most of the time

  • has difficulty facing everyday challenges or focusing on work or studies

  • is using drugs or alcohol in a way that is not healthful

  • is at risk of harming themselves or others

  • feels that their situation will never improve, despite receiving help from friends and family

  • has experienced an abusive situation

  • has a mental health condition, such as schizophrenia, that affects their daily life

You can book an intake session with me through my website or by calling my mobile or sending me an email.
